KILDARE ROAD RESIDENCE, FLOREAT

Confronted with the dilemma of interfering with a home designed by prominent Perth architects Krantz & Sheldon in 1965, the strategy for this project was a crash course education on the introduction of modernist European architecture to Western Australia. In plan, the existing home reads as an inverted 'L' from Kildare Road. Redistribution of the plan called for a master bedroom positioned to fill in the 'L', a new garage and a children's entertainment precinct (which doubles as independent accommodation) opening onto the vast backyard. As the existing building presented a blank cube to street, the addition is conceived as an autonomous cuboid form that has been eroded and sculpted to expose a tapestry of elegant forms, materials and finishes prominent in the 1960's.
